I read some of James Runcie's mystery stories after seeing adaptations on PBS"s Masterpiece Mystery program. "The Discovery of Chocolate" is unlike Runcie's other stories, in that it is a complete story. This novel is thoroughly engaging from the start, wonderfully descriptive, fantastic yet convincing, and extremely well told. Highly recommended.

Mmmmmm, this book is wonderful and delicious! Be sure to have your favourite chocolate with you while you read this. And a good chunk of time to read it completely as you will not want to put the book down! You'll learn about the history of chocolate worldwide, and there is a great love story as well. I definately recommend this title, a very enjoyable read!

A young Spaniard, Diego de Godoy travels with Cortes and the Conquistadors to the New World. He is engaged to a beautiful young woman at home and has promised her to bring back to her a piece of treasure. It is with his first sip of cacahuatl, or chocolate, that he finds passion and true love. The lovely Ignaicia is everything he has never known before and he is enchanted with her and her chocolate making skills. During the seige he leaves her vowing to return and she presses into his hands a vessel that contains a special chocolate drink that he is to imbide while on the way back to Spain. When he does, he lets his faithful greyhound lick out the bowl. What he laters finds out is that Ignacia has mixed the Elixir of Life in this one drink. Now Diego, and his canine companion, must live forever, traveling across several centuries looking everywhere for the perfect chocolate and his one true love.
