A powerful indictment of the samurai code and conduct in this riveting cinematic masterpiece.

Set during the Edo period, where many masterless Samurai lived in poverty, it was a common occurrence for penniless ronin to beg their local feudal lords for the honor of committing ritual suicide in their courtyards, with the hope of receiving alms. Nakadai returns in this classic as an aging samurai in this beautifully constructed tale of love and honor. A must-see film.

This is a good one except for the 20 minute long, monotone speech around 90 minutes in.

A period piece that belongs on the keychain of any American seeking to unlock Japan. Through the melodrama expressed in this film, they can grasp the more subtle aspects of duty and obligation throughout the rest of of Japanese cinema (not to mention the absence of them in their own culture?). This is not a happy movie.

ne of the great Japanese films of the 60s, Kobayashi's "Hara-kiri" is both an intense personal tragedy and a trenchant indictment of authoritarian systems that destroy the individual. Terrifically shot and edited, intricately structured (much of it is the protagonist relating his story), and very well acted, especially by Nakadai (Sword of Doom, Ran). Also know as "Seppuku."

Tatsuya Nakadai (Yojimbo, Kagsmusha, Human condition/Ningen no joken) at his best. He became to the bone of 50ish widower profoundly at 30 years old - a remarkable achievement of this stage background actor.

One of the best samurai movies of all time.
Love RAN for its visuals & Seven Samurai for its action, but this story is at the HEART of the Samurai code.
Incredibly intense movie about life, death, duty & honor. The lead actor is unbelievably powerful.
Cinematography is sublime.
Saw it 30 years ago and still think it's in the top 10.

Oh, my God. We're against spoilers here, so...it's the one where the guy forces the other guy to do the thing, and events spiral out of control from there. Honestly, this is a film that must be seen to be appreciated.
