I hadn't seen this movie since the early 1990s so it was like watching it for the first time with a new perspective. River Phoenix is truly spectacular, physically and as an actor. Keanu Reeves is very handsome as well but not such a good actor. The bonus features are fantastic.

Not sure why I love this movie so much. It might be River Phoenix's stellar work. Or the fact that it's the best thing that Keanu Reeves has ever done. Gus Van Sant's directing is wonderful, including a few minutes of actual interviews with rent boys, seamlessly sewn into the plot.
It's adult material - probably the only story of a narcoleptic rentboy you'll ever find. With highly unusual and unexpectedly tasteful sex scenes.
It feels authentic, it speaks loudly with a clear voice, and it's sensitive and warm.
I guess that's why I like it so much.

This film tells it like it is. Great acting by River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves.

This movie's got so much style! Like French new wave levels, and Rivers and Keanu channeling some good stuff.

Sort of Oliver Twist meets Brokeback Mountain, good acting especially from River Phoenix - a shame we lost him so young - but not much of a story to go with it, I was expecting a little more given its reputation, maybe the film was more cutting edge 20 years ago, but not so much today.

Talented actors, wonderful soundtrack, great cinematography, good ending, but boring plot.

Beautifully lush film about subtlety, character, and love. Truly one of the masterpieces of independent filmmaking. The images and scenes will haunt in a good way for days afterwards. Highest recommendation if you enjoy romance films without all the clich├ęs, appreciate virtuoso acting and deeply drawn characters. Absolutely stunning and a treasure.
