Coal . . . "King Coal" . . . determined the fate of the Edward Demmer and S.H. Kimbal. Energy was the lifeblood of the developing Midwest. In an ironic twist of fate, both ships were lost in similar conditions, 28 years apart. Both were upbound, in heavy Lake Huron fog, and suffered collisions on the starboard side.
